Sustainable investing

We research and work with investment managers who can provide lasting results for clients without taking on too much risk.

In addition, we assist clients in developing portfolios in a way that considers their long-term financial interests — not just current trends or short-term performance metrics.

• Sustainability Ratings for Investment Managers – Sustainability means making sure that the managers we work with are evaluating sustainability factors in their processes, or understanding why they do not, given the potential impact on financial performance. Segal Marco maintains a proprietary scorecard that evaluates the sustainability policies and practices of equity, fixed income, and alternatives investment managers.  The results provide us and our clients with a touchstone to benchmark and compare different investment strategies and managers, as well as a system to measure progress over time.  For more information on Sustainability Ratings of Investment Managers, click here. 
• Corporate Governance and Proxy Voting Practice – Sustainability is also demonstrated in Segal Marco’s corporate governance services for clients, in which we engage companies on corporate governance topics and vote proxies on behalf of clients. Our corporate governance and proxy voting practice has been active since 1989.  In addition to voting proxies for +11,000 global companies annually and providing corporate engagement services to clients working to ensure that the companies in which they invest are well-governed, we serve as an advisor and educational resource for clients seeking to implement best-in-class sustainable investing programs.

Our sustainability initiatives

Segal Marco has undertaken a number of initiatives recently related to sustainable investing and corporate sustainability. They include:

• A corporate sustainability report that details Segal Marco’s commitment to these issues as a firm
• A survey of asset managers we work with on their own firm's sustainability policies and practices
• Segal Marco Advisors has assembled a Working Group Committee for Diversity Investing. Their goal is to increase the allocation of Emerging/Diverse managers across client portfolios.
